September 1st, 2008

Zomeravonden has past already, it was a great festival. See some pictures at flickr.
We have already started working on the next project which will be 12, 13, 14, 16 and 17 September at AINSI Theater in Maastricht. Moroi: together with creator Jenneke van der Weijden, dance ensemble Inazuma and actress Ingrid Cornelissen. This will be a special event. For all Dutch people here you can read the press text:

In September is tijdens de opening van het theaterseizoen een bijzondere schouwspel te zien in het AINSI gebouw te Maastricht.

Het is een samenwerking tussen mensen met verschillende disciplines. Het betreft dansatelier Inazuma, de band Zonderland, Ingrid Cornelissen en schepster Jenneke van der Weijden.

De bijzondere combinatie tussen de ambient- postrock formatie Zonderland, die vanuit improvisatie een op de binnenwereld gericht geluidsbeeld creëren, Dansatelier Inazuma dat modern Japans Bewegingstheater maakt, spel van Ingrid Cornelissen en beelden van schepster Jenneke van der Weijden resulteren in een hedendaags schouwspel.

Stof.

Onopgemerkt ligt het er.

De deur gaat open.

Een luchtstroom.

Het stof dwarrelt op en vormt een wolk.

Stof ademen. De adem tot stof geblazen.

Ik was hier al. Ik heb hier altijd al gezeten.

Niemand zag mij. Niemand ziet mij. Toch ben ik hier.

Eén beweging en alles zal nooit meer hetzelfde zijn.

Ik schrijf op de muur, opdat men mij niet vergeet.

Treurnis om mijn niemand zijn: mijn stof zijn.

Stof tot nadenken, stof om uit te kloppen.

Stof voortgekomen uit het niets. Het is er zomaar.

Het herinnert ons eraan dat wij,

de mens en zijn product, voorbijgaand zijn.

So much things been going on lately. We had the VPRO recordings which will be broadcast in September on radio. We still have to do the interview for this one, but that should happen soon.
Wednesday August 6th Sietse had an interview for the radio program Majjem on the local radio Omroep Venlo. The interview was about us, his solo project and the upcoming festival Zomeravonden. After the interview they played one of our new tracks, which by now you can also listen to on our myspace page. If you want to listen to the radio program and the interview that is still possible. Just check this site here.
At the festival Zomeravonden we will play on the Saturday evening being followed by Staplerfahrer. Come check it out, it will be great.
There is more info on the performances we will do in September. The show will be named Moroi. The coming weeks we will be practicing with the dancers so we will be well prepared for the whole show. More info will be announced soon.

June 22th, 2008

People might think, why no update since the recordings for the VPRO, well that's easy: they were canceled just before they would take place. Instead we will record June 28th.
We have two things coming up. First will be a festival in August for "Zomeravonden" in Maastricht. The festival will be 13th to 17th and we will play one of the evenings. And not only that, we have also currated the whole event. Other musicians playing are Beequeen, Wouter van Veldhoven, The Grassmoawers, Swerve, Staplerfahrer and our own Orphax.
The other thing coming up is a series of 4 performances also in Maastricht in a Theater with 3 dancers and 1 graphical artist. All will be in September and this is something to look forward to. More info soon.

The date for recording in the VPRO studios is know. On Saturday May 17th we will be recording about 30 minutes of material that will be played in the radio show Dwars and available on their website later on.
September will see bring us 4 live gigs in Maastricht. More info on this really soon.

March 27th, 2008

We have been played during the program Dwars Plus on VPRO Radio 6 of March 1st, 2008. If you are interested you can listen to the radio show at the website of Dwars
Following this we have also been asked to do a session and interview for VPRO Radio 6 in the program Dwars. This will probably be recorded in May. More info on this as soon as we have it.
The festival we are organizing has changed. We were first thinking about May, but this has changed to June or July. More on this soon also.
Soon some new recordings can be expected also. Sietse has got a new recording device that we use in the studio so we can record our weekly improvisations. We will keep you up to date on this matter also.

February 29th, 2008

We are going to play at a cultural event in Maastricht, The Netherlands at the end of May. Beside us playing we are also currating this event. Other artists contacted are Wouter van Veldhoven, The Puddle Parade, Orphax and Super Judas. More info on this soon.
Our song Buddha/Ex-Buddha has been played at the radioshow Majjem from the Venlo local radio. It was good fun to hear this. Good people at that show. Check them out at myspace.

Just a short update this time. Oidipus: Motherfucker got a review in Vital Weekly. You can read it here:

ZONDERLAND - OIDIPUS: MOTHERFUCKER (CDR, private)
A new band, but with one person who we met before: Orphax' own Sietse is part of Zonderland, together with one Bart and Michel. There are no credits towards the instruments, but we hear drums, guitars and electronics (Orphax is known to play laptop, but who knows what else he has mastered?), but perhaps it's all pre-programmed on laptops? Who can tell in the digital age? A two hour session was recorded in a studio in Utrecht which was edited down to this one hour release in three lengthy pieces of music. There is an element of improvisation to be detected in this music - obviously, I should add - which could have perhaps needed a bit further trimming, but I must say hats off for this. Post rock may be well over its height but that should not stop people from creating music like that. Themselves give references to Godspeed, Subarachnoid Space, Tarentel and Arvo Part - who am I to add more names to that list. They took their references very well and play music that is very much alike that. Pieces are built up slowly and over the course of many minutes it grows and grows, like a cascading wave (the Godspeed approach I would call this), but then it breaks down as such as things started only to built new theme upon new theme. Head space music, post space rock, gravel noise or such things like. Dark, of course, but taken with all the right substances (more smoke than alcohol) you could easily be lost in this trip. I think Zonderland holds many promises and are perhaps unprecedented in The Netherlands. They should shop around for a real CD release and start touring: they can be big. (FdW)

Finally, Oidipus: Motherfucker is for sale on the website. We have choosen for the price of 8 euro in the Netherlands and 9,50 euro for Non-Dutch customers. This includes shipment. November 16th, 2007

So long no update, but so much to tell. The recordings we did in June have worked out great. The artwork has been done now and in the coming few weeks the first cd's are going to be made. The name of the album is Oidipus: Motherfucker and will be for sale on this website soon.
Michel made the artwork for the cd and this is what it looks like:

June 26th, 2007

Finally, next week we are going to record in the studio. Thursday, June 5th, we will have the whole evening to record our music. We are looking forward to it. When it is done, you can expect some new music online here and maybe even some cd-r release for sale. Time will tell.

Loads of things have been happening the last half year, both good and bad.
First of all there is this completely new website.
In September we did our last live set, which was with all four of us. It was a long set in two parts with some really nice tunes and some less nice tunes.
John has moved to Sweden for his work and is now only playing with us when he is in the land. Sadly enough this is not very often.
With out John, we are now working on new material. The plans are that we will record this at the end of May, or else begin June. This will be some psyched-out post-rock with loads of drones and ambient pieces. It is slightly a departure from our older work.
Zonderland is now also available at Last.fm. For now you can only listen to our live performance from Proeflokaal #44 at Theater Kikker.
Last news for now is that our email address changed.. The old one did seem to work very well for us, since none ever checked it. For all inquiries regarding zonderland you can now email sietse.van.erve@gmail.com. Please use the word Zonderland in the subject.
